In July of 2008 I traveled to Malawi in southern Africa to photograph for the Colorado based non-profit Water for People. In February and March of 2009 an exhibit of photographs from that assignment was on display at Gallery 910 in Denver Colorado. That experience crystallized the idea for Project Exposure.
Having worked with Water for People on a similar project in Guatemala in 2007, I knew from experience that they wanted the photographs to tell the story of Malawians as resourceful and empowered people living proudly even in poverty. I also knew that Water for People, like many non-profits, was struggling to come up with funds. They managed to prevail but the experience got me thinking; if there were a way to pay for the travel so that photographers could shoot without depending on scarce funds from non-profits it would be beneficial to everyone. The photographer would get to do the work they’re passionate about and the non-profit would get high quality professional photography for all their fundraising and communication needs. What was missing was the way to bridge the gap. So, with that in mind I set out to start Project Exposure.
Starting with the public kickoff of Project Exposure on March 24th, 2009 we hope to receive enough contributions from individuals, businesses and foundations to fund our first collaboration between a non-profit and photographer in 2010. If you’re interested in helping us in any way, please contact us.
Lastly, check back periodically and see how we’re doing. We have plans to add several features to the website that will keep you up to date on all that’s happening at Project Exposure.
Best Regards,
